What is Green Infrastructure?

Nature-based solutions for a resilient built environment

Green Infrastructure (GI) refers to the strategic integration of natural systems and engineered solutions designed to address environmental challenges in urban and rural landscapes. It incorporates interconnected networks of natural and constructed features — bioretention areas, green roofs, permeable pavements, constructed wetlands, urban forests, rain gardens, and more — that replicate ecological processes to deliver critical services including stormwater management, water quality improvement, climate adaptation, flood mitigation, urban heat reduction, and enhanced public health.

Unlike traditional "gray infrastructure" such as concrete storm drains, Green Infrastructure works with natural processes rather than against them — managing rainfall at its source, reducing runoff, improving water quality, sequestering carbon, and creating more livable, resilient communities. GI is applied at every scale: from a single rain garden on a residential lot to watershed-wide planning frameworks guiding entire cities and regions.

GI intersects with stormwater engineering, landscape architecture, urban planning, environmental compliance, land development, construction, ecology, public policy, and community development — making it one of the most cross-disciplinary fields in the built environment today.

💧
Stormwater Management
Manages rainfall at its source through infiltration, evapotranspiration, storage, and filtration — reducing runoff volume, peak flows, and downstream flooding.
🌿
Water Quality Improvement
Removes pollutants — sediment, nutrients, heavy metals, bacteria — from stormwater before it reaches rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
🏙️
Climate & Community Resilience
Mitigates urban heat islands, sequesters carbon, supports biodiversity, raises property values, and creates healthier, more livable communities.
⚖️
Regulatory Compliance
Helps municipalities and developers meet Clean Water Act NPDES, MS4 permit, TMDL, and local stormwater requirements through sustainable, cost-effective practices.
